DIY Tooth paste’s /Mouthwash formula’s

Its fun to create your own hygiene products. That way, I know what ingredients have gone into it and the result is as good as the store bought solutions. Sometimes even better. Making my own hygiene/ cosmetics/ bath products leaves me with a sense of control thats hard to compare.

Here’s how.

Basic Toothpaste

  • Honey

  • Ground charcoal

Mix into a paste and rub on teeth for whiteness.

Simple toothpaste mixtures

  • Bicarbonate of soda

  • Salt

  • Water

  • Glycerine

  • Peppermint oil

Mix 3 parts bicarbonate of soda with one part salt. Add 3 tsp of glycerine for every 1/4 cup of this mixture, then add enough water to make a thick paste. Add a few drops of peppermint oil for better taste.

 Mint Toothpaste

  • 1/4 tsp peppermint oil

  • 1/4 tsp spearmint

  • 1/4 cup arrowroot

  • 1/4 cup powdered orrisroot

  • 1/4 cup water

  • 1 tsp ground sage

Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl. Add water until paste is desired thickness / consistency. Store at room temperature in a tightly covered jar.

Substitute 1/2 tsp each of oil of cinnamon and oil of cloves for peppermint/spearmint if desired.

Rosemary toothpowder

1/4 tsp peppermint essential oil

  • 1/4 tsp dried peppermint leaves

  • 1/4 cup powdered chalk

  • 1/4 cup powdered orrisroot

  • 1/4 cup powdered rosemary charcoal*

  • 1 tsp ground dried rosemary leaves

* To make rosemary charcoal, char several cups of dried rosemary in dry iron skillet. When it begins to char/ blacken, turn off the heat and stir vigorously. Be sure to not toast it for too long or it will turn grey and you will get ash instead of charcoal.

Mix all ingredients together and pass through a sieve so you don’t have any lumps. Store in an airtight jar.

Natural Fruit teeth cleaners!

1) Rub a lemon rind on your teeth to remove brown stains. Rinse your mouth thoroughly afterward.

2) Rub your teeth with a fresh ripe strawberry. Rub it over and between your teeth. Strawberry whitens and brightens.

  • 2 cups water

  • 3 tsp fresh parsley

  • 2 tsp whole cloves

  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 2 tsp peppermint extract

Boil water and remove from heat. Add dry ingredients and allow to steep for 10-15 minutes. Strain and store in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator.

You can substitute other flavorings for peppermint if the minty flavor is not to your taste.

Quicky Breath Fresheners

  1. Gargle and rinse with undiluted rose water.

  2. Chew a sprig of parsley or watercress.

  1. Hey, I wonder, how long do these toothpastes stay good for?
I have been for a while thinking to do my own. It is so romantic going back in the past (or better said, all this may become our very real future)

    1. Hi Outbulb, Thanks for your comment.
The toothpastes will stay good for 2-3 months easily. The glycerine, and the essential oils keep mould at bay. BUt after 3 months, i cant tell. Best to make them in small batches.
Yes. i agree with your thought of the past becoming our future. More and more people are making natural choices and going back to living organic and rustic. There’s a lot of joy and simplicity in that, don’t you think? 🙂
